Privacy policy
A plain-language summary of what is collected and why.
Newsletter signups
EmailOctopus processes the email address, any first name you provide (required on some signup forms), and your optional answer to “how did you hear about us?” We also record newsletter signup source and campaign information when available from referral links, campaign tags, or the website that referred you. This information helps send The Local Detour and understand where readers discover it. Subscriber information is not sold to advertisers.
Website analytics
The Local Detour uses Google Analytics to understand how people find and use the site, including pages viewed, general traffic sources, device/browser information, approximate geography and interactions such as navigation or share clicks. Google Analytics may use cookies or similar identifiers. This information is used to improve the site and is not sold by The Local Detour.
Website forms
Information submitted through tip and partnership forms is used to review the request and reply when appropriate.
Giveaways and referrals
When The Local Detour runs a giveaway, entry information such as first name, email address, ZIP code, entry time and referral source may be stored to administer the promotion, prevent duplicate or fraudulent entries, select and contact a winner, and measure campaign performance. Newsletter permission is separate and optional. Giveaway partners do not receive The Local Detour entrant or subscriber email list. Referral links may be used to credit eligible new subscribers to the person who referred them. The referral sharing tools do not ask you to submit friends’ email addresses to The Local Detour. If you choose the email-sharing option, your own email application opens with a draft message; The Local Detour does not receive the recipient’s email address unless that person later chooses to submit it directly. Giveaway entry and referral records are generally retained for up to 12 months after a giveaway ends and then deleted or de-identified. Aggregate campaign statistics and winner/draw audit records may be retained longer for legitimate recordkeeping.
Hosting and spam protection
Netlify hosts the site and processes its website forms. The newsletter form uses Google reCAPTCHA to reduce spam.
Affiliate links and tracking
The Local Detour may use affiliate partners on some links. Those services may use cookies or similar tracking to attribute a booking or purchase. Affiliate relationships do not determine what gets featured.
