The Holiday Detour.
November and December, narrowed down to the light shows, Christmas markets and seasonal outings actually worth leaving the house for.
Bright downtown streets, bigger light displays, Christmas markets and one-night events that make a cold evening worth the trip. There are free plans in here too, so a good December doesn’t have to get expensive.
The season really starts once the lights turn on.
Illumination at The Morton Arboretum
The big-name holiday lights play nearby, with a one-mile light trail, music and a more polished holiday night-out feel.
Christkindlmarket Aurora
The cleanest holiday market option in the suburbs: RiverEdge Park, European-style stalls, warm drinks and a solid excuse to spend a few hours downtown.
Holiday Magic
Brookfield Zoo’s holiday lights run is a strong all-ages move if you want something bigger than a neighborhood display.
Christmas at Cantigny
Illuminated gardens, the decorated McCormick House, ice skating and cocoa cabanas make this one feel more like a full evening than a quick stop.
St. Charles Holiday Homecoming
The Friday lighting ceremony and Saturday Electric Christmas Parade make this one of the better official holiday kickoffs.
Cosley Zoo Festival of Lights
A very easy family tradition: light displays, Christmas trees, hot chocolate and free entry without turning it into an all-night production.
Holiday Sip & Stroll
If you want a holiday plan without kids, this adults-only preview night gives you lights, cocktails and a little more energy than the family nights.
Firefly Holiday Market
A sizable indoor maker market at DuPage County Fairgrounds, if you prefer finding gifts from small vendors over walking a mall.
Lightscape at Chicago Botanic Garden
A longer drive for a true destination light walk, with immersive installations and music across a mile of garden paths. Parking is extra for nonmembers.
Aurora Winter Lights Parade & Drone Show
A lit-up parade, city tree lighting and a drone show above the Fox River. The Downer Place bridges are the best vantage points.
Tinley Park Tree Lighting at Harmony Square
The village flips on its 44-foot tree to start the season, with a holiday sing-along beforehand.
Light Up the Park
An unusually full free holiday kickoff: horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice-sculpting, Santa, carolers and the park’s 80,000 lights. Bring your own skates for free rink admission.
Glen Ellyn Holiday Walk & Tree Lighting
Downtown storefronts, music, hot cocoa and Santa lighting the village tree. The small-town version of a big holiday kickoff.
Light Up the Holidays Festival & Parade
A downtown celebration with a holiday parade, market, horse-drawn carriage rides and a fireworks finale.
A Christmas Carol at Drury Lane
A short, production-heavy stage adaptation with snow effects and illusions. A smart choice if you want a holiday show without committing to a long musical.
Celebration of Lights
The Riverwalk fills with lighted trees, reindeer, Santa, live music and free activities. The late-afternoon arrival works well before bedtime.
Santa’s Naperville Workshop
A one-family-at-a-time Santa visit at the Paddleboat Quarry rather than the usual crowded photo line. Reservations open October 20 for residents.
Then December turns into one long excuse to go out.
Geneva Christmas Walk
If you want the classic downtown holiday scene — tree lighting, Santa, carolers and packed sidewalks — this is still one of the nicest versions of it.
Christkindlmarket Aurora
Still one of the easiest December picks when you want a holiday atmosphere without overthinking it.
Illumination at The Morton Arboretum
If you only do one bigger ticketed holiday lights outing, this is still the one most people mean.
Aurora Festival of Lights
A free drive-through fallback that works especially well for colder nights or when you want holiday lights without getting everyone out of the car.
Cosley Zoo Festival of Lights
This is one of the best easy traditions in the suburbs — very doable, very family-friendly and not overbuilt.
Holiday Magic
Still a very good December night if you want more to do once you’re there, including lights, seasonal treats and a bigger footprint.
Christmas at Cantigny
One of the more complete holiday evening options nearby, especially if you want lights plus skating, food and something that feels a little more date-night friendly.
Lights of Lisle
A Santa parade through downtown, tree lighting and luminaria, plus the old-fashioned Once Upon a Christmas activities at the station park museums.
Hometown Holiday
Downtown Lemont packs Santa visits, shopping and the tree lighting into one walkable afternoon.
Tinley Park Holiday Market & Parade of Lights
A heated maker market at Harmony Square, followed by Sunday’s lit-up parade along Oak Park Avenue.
Merry & Bright: A Victorian Christmas
Tour the historic Blodgett House by holiday light, then follow the luminaries past decorated trees and Victorian carolers.
Glen Ellyn Snow Globe Stroll
Holiday windows around downtown turn an evening of dinner or shopping into a self-guided walk with something to look for.
Santa’s Craft Corner at Cosley Zoo
A smaller Santa visit paired with crafts and treats inside the barn. It’s an easy choice for younger kids, with advance booking required.
Illumination Dog Nights
One of the few dates when your dog can join you on Morton Arboretum’s illuminated trail. Separate dog admission applies.
A Christmas Carol at Drury Lane
A theatrical holiday outing with falling snow and visual illusions, in a roughly one-hour production made for a family matinee.
