September and October fill up fast around here. Here’s what’s actually worth knowing about.
Oktoberfest, sorted.
There were enough suburban Oktoberfests this year that a plain list stopped being useful. Current options are first; below the divider are earlier-season standouts worth remembering for next fall.
Naper Settlement Oktoberfest
Best when you want Oktoberfest to be the whole plan: a giant heated tent, German food, a deep beer lineup and live entertainment.
North Aurora Oktoberfest
Free entry, but drinking requires a Village Oktoberfest stein plus drink tokens; food is extra. The noon-to-10 PM window still makes it an easy afternoon stop or full evening.
Schaumburg Octoberfest
A contained daytime option with free admission and an optional $10 activity bracelet if the kids want more to do.
Itasca Oktoberfest
One of the better no-admission options this season, with German food, live music, stein holding and a kids corner.
Palatine Oktoberfest
A three-day option with German music, food and drink plus a strong family-programming window during the weekend.
Downers Grove Oktoberfest
The ticketed choice when the concert side matters as much as the beer-and-brats side, with large tents in downtown Downers Grove.

Schaumburg Septemberfest
Three days of live entertainment, carnival rides, arts and crafts, food, a beer and wine garden, a Sunday drone display and Monday’s Labor Day parade.
Frankfort Fall Festival
Historic downtown fills with 300+ artisans, festival food, live entertainment, carnival rides and the Sunday parade.
St. Cletus Fall Fest
A four-day parish festival with food, games, carnival rides and live entertainment.
Oktoberfest by Schnitzel Platz
German bands, schnitzel and bratwurst, German beer and a kids inflatable area at Camera Park.
Itasca Oktoberfest

Geneva Festival of the Vine

Cantigny Fall Fest

Brookfield Zoo’s Halloween run mixes trick-or-treating, costumes, festive extras and a solid excuse to do the zoo while the weather still cooperates.
Cosley Zoo Pumpkin Fest
A simple low-effort fallback with zoo animals, thousands of pumpkins and seasonal browsing if you want something easy and not all-day.
LOTUS at the Paddleboat Quarry
Six enormous illuminated lotus flowers float above the Riverwalk quarry after dark. A short, unusual, free night out that works without buying tickets.
Batavia BatFest
A downtown-wide Halloween day with trick-or-treating at 60-plus businesses, costume contests, performances and a pumpkin roll.
Family Spooktacular at Naper Settlement

Naperville Pumpkin Race
Watch pumpkins on wheels race down the hill at Rotary Hill. Racing is free to watch; a build-your-own racing kit costs extra.
Halloween Happening
Games, candy and activities at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion, designed for children 10 and under. An easy free afternoon.
Howl-o-Ween at The Morton Arboretum
Bring your dog in costume for a morning Halloween walk at the Arboretum. Regular admission applies, plus a separate dog ticket.
Halloween SCARE-illon Concert
A free 50-minute Halloween concert played on the bells of the Millennium Carillon. Listen from Rotary Hill or the Riverwalk.
